As Mental Health Awareness Month draws to a close, we’d like to share some ideas for helping one another.

This month, we’re featuring community service project ideas from Kealakehe Intermediate School students, plus a boatload of mental health resources to help you help yourself and others.

Mental Health Awareness Month resources

Although we usually feature an event here, this month we wanted to share some of the many Hawaiʻi-specific resources available to uplift youth mental health. Many of these initiatives began in the past few years to improve accessibility and raise awareness. We are all stronger when we know how to help ourselves and one another.

• Help Your Keiki is a straightforward place for adults to learn about child and adolescent mental health issues, as well as what they can do to help.

• Hawaiʻi Department of Education’s Here to Help page contains explanations of how the department approaches students’ needs, including available resources for all students.

• Teen Link Hawaiʻi is a youth-focused website with lots of resources. The linked page offers mental health information, referrals to service, and shareable infographics and videos.

• TAP808 is all about healthy relationships. In addition to advocacy and trainings, they directly help young people experiencing relationship abuse with everything from counseling to legal assistance. Their social media pages are youth-run.

• No Shame Get Help covers immediate crisis referrals, mental health self-screenings, and information to empower youth to help themselves and others with everything from self-care to dealing with the aftermath of a suicide attempt.

• Hōkūpaʻa’s Resource Page has links to more social-emotional wellness and behavioral health resources.
